It is with grief that The Executive Committee of the Apostolat Militaire International has to announce the passing away of their advisor em dr prof Fred van Iersel. Unfortunately he was incurably ill for some period , but he was glad that in his last year he felt intensely happy and could entrust himself to the carrying power of God and of people.
His activities in AMI contributed to that feeling, due to his participation on the Military pilgrimage in Lourdes, the AMI Conference 2022 in London and the participation in the AMI delegation during the meeting of the Catholic Inspired NGO’s in Rome in December 2022. His experience during the Lourdes Pilgrimage inspired him to write his last book: A lifetime of Lourdes/Een leven lang Lourdes.
As a theologian and ethicist, Fred distinguished himself by his unbridled work force and his involvement in various social themes related to war and peace, military ethics and spiritual care. He was committed to the dignity of every human being, to justice and peace, giving shape to both his academic and political drive. The AMI community is very grateful for his contribution to the development of our organization during his involvement for more than 20 years.
Our thoughts are with his caring wife Marieke and his family.
May he rest in peace.
