On 22 September 2023, just a week after the 58th General Assembly and AMI Conference in Mechelen (Belgium), the President of the Apostolat Militari International, Vice-Admiral (ret) Matthieu Borsboom was appointed Knight Commander with the Equestrian Pontifical Order of St Gregory the Great by the Pope.
He was rewarded because of his extraordinary contribution to faith, the Church and society, the significance of which extends to the church-provincial or national level.
The decoration was presented to him by the apostolic administrator of the Netherlands Military Ordinariate, Bishop Everardus de Jong, on the day Borsboom resigned after serving as Chairman of the Dutch Vfonds – the fund for peace, freedom and veterans. He was a member of the board for ten years.
